Employee Recognition

What is an employee recognition?

Employee recognition is, at its core, a simple acknowledgement of the work of a member of staff. This can be made publicly or directly to the employee in question. Employee recognition can improve employee morale for the individual being recognised. Further, recognising certain performance can help reinforce brand ethics, to create a more inclusive working environment and to – sometimes, at least – address issues of under-recognition in the workplace.

The Biggest Employee Experience Trends of 2021

Based on unique insights from over 300 HR professionals and organisational leaders, The State of Employee Engagement 2021 report reveals HR’s biggest priorities right now, the challenges ahead for hybrid working, and uncovers the great employee engagement divide.

Why is it important to recognise employees?

Acknowledging the good work of members of your team can do a great deal to make them feel respected, valued and appreciated by their employers. Businesses that do not engage in a formal employee recognition system may choose to do it informally – or even not at all – but this tends to mean that employees will feel more and more unvalued over time, something that is undesirable in most workplaces.

The fact is that employee recognition can be achieved in numerous ways and there is no single best practice. Often, it will come down to the business culture of the organisation that wants to recognise the achievements and efforts of its employees. There again, how to go about it might boil down to the way certain individuals want to be recognised for their work. Some might like a bonus but others might prefer an award. Some would like a big fuss made of them while more retiring people tend to prefer a simpler acknowledgement.

What should employers do to make employees feel recognised at work?

There again, how to go about it might boil down to the way certain individuals want to be recognised for their work. Some might like a bonus but others might prefer an award.

Showing people they are valued and respected at work is a great way to improve employee engagement. Big prizes, public speeches of acceptance and overtly promotional employee recognition schemes aren’t for everyone. Indeed, they are not suited to all workplaces either, so employers need to find ways to make employees feel valued in their own ways. As such, it is useful to think about simple ways to recognise individuals. Employee of the month or quarter awards are fairly commonplace and work well. This tends to be a formal way of recognising people and might come with a prize or a bonus as well as the honour of achieving the award.

That said, less formal ways of recognising employees can also be sometimes just as effective. You could simply place a card on the desk of an individual who is working well that says their efforts have been noticed. This way, anyone passing by would notice it and perhaps see that individual in a new light. Low-cost options include offering gift cards to people you want to recognise or simply giving them an additional day’s leave as a way of saying ‘thank you’ for something they have done. More importantly, day-to-day employee recognition means that senior managers should always – or usually – address their workers by thanking them. If you send an email update to employees every month or so, why not recognise the good work that has been done even if you want to address something you think needs to be improved?

Find Out How WorkBuzz Can Help

How can WorkBuzz surveys help with employee recognition?

WorkBuzz’s digital platform gives all workers a chance to give feedback to their employers about how valued, respected, appreciated and recognised they feel. This alone allows senior managers to better understand whether or not they need to up their game with respect to employee recognition. In addition, staff surveys can be tailored so that employees get the chance to say who they think ought to be recognised. By doing so anonymously, they can give their honest opinions about one another, allowing HR professionals and senior managers to recognise members of staff who most deserve it. This is particularly useful if you employ some people who always seem to get the attention while others go unrecognised for their achievements.
