Being visible as a leader is no longer optional
Building the currency of trust with Dialogue
What will you ask?
Leadership visibility consistently ranks in the top three employee engagement issues across organisations of every size and sector that we work with. In fact, only 51% of UK employees feel their leaders demonstrate empathy and 77% want more visibility and better communication from their leaders, according to WorkBuzz research.
Why does visibility matter so much?
Because it’s intrinsically linked to trust - and all the benefits that come with that. We know that where there is trust in leadership, there is higher employee engagement, a healthier culture, and stronger alignment between leadership and the rest of the organisation.
And, in our distributed, hybrid, digital world of work, trust matters more than ever. As authors at MIT put it:
“In an era of high transparency, where every meeting can be replayed, every comment rated, and every decision scrutinised online, competence alone no longer sustains trust.”
The authors present the case for visibility as the new test of leadership - the currency through which leaders project their credibility and anchor their personal reputation. If this is the case, then being visible as a leader is no longer a personal choice, it’s a critical leadership competency.
Being visible as a leader is no longer optional
So, how do you approach visibility in a way that builds trust through communication that shouts authenticity and connection to everyday work?
The most effective approach requires leaders to step away from the comfort of well-produced broadcasts that travel down through management layers and polished communications with various levels of sign-off.
Leaders must venture into new territory to build trust. Those who are visible and credible tend to do the same things consistently:
- Be seen, heard and respond in the moment.
- Be transparent about the intent behind a question or communication.
- Translate complex messages into narratives that every employee understands.
- Cultivate a frequent, coherent presence that normalises personal interactions with senior leaders and keeps the conversation open.
- Close the loop on conversations by explaining a course of action and why it was taken.
- Leaders launch a Loop in under five minutes, asking a focused question by video and gathering feedback from 20 to 20,000 people.
- Employees respond by video, voice note or text, unfiltered, in their own language.
- AI rapidly distils responses into clear, actionable insight as soon as the Loop closes.
- Leaders respond with a second short video summarising what they heard and what action they’ll take.
The challenge, particularly for leaders of large, distributed or deskless workforces, is doing all of this at scale. This is what Dialogue was built to resolve.
Building the currency of trust with Dialogue
Dialogue enables a rhythm of regular conversation loops between leaders and their people. It’s quick and easy to set up and it starts to build trust from the outset.
Every feedback loop compounds: when leaders ask a genuine question, hear the response synthesised honestly, and act visibly within 24 hours, something changes in the relationship between a leader and their people.
Employees feel heard, not surveyed. They feel involved in shaping the decisions that affect them, not informed about decisions already made.
Over time, that shift accumulates into a culture where leaders are trusted because they are consistently seen to listen and act.
What will you ask?
With Dialogue, trust is built one conversation at a time. The leaders building it the fastest are the ones already asking, listening and responding. What would you ask your people?
