WorkBuzz achieves ISO/IEC 42001, reinforcing customer trust in AI

Leading employee listening platform joins a formative group of organisations worldwide to achieve the international standard for responsible AI management.

ISO-IEC 42001-2023WorkBuzz, the employee listening platform helping organisations improve employee experience through better insight, has achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification – the world’s first internationally recognised standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS).

The certification demonstrates WorkBuzz’s commitment to developing, deploying and governing artificial intelligence responsibly, providing customers with independent assurance that AI in

The achievement builds on WorkBuzz’s existing ISO 27001 certification for information security management, extending the company’s governance framework beyond protecting customer data to encompass the responsible design, development and use of artificial intelligence.

Together, these internationally recognised certifications demonstrate WorkBuzz’s commitment to building technology that organisations can trust.

What is ISO/IEC 42001?

As organisations increasingly embrace AI, ensuring that it is deployed responsibly has become a strategic priority.

Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), ISO/IEC 42001 is the world’s first management system standard specifically designed for artificial intelligence. It provides organisations with a structured framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).

Unlike technical AI standards that focus on algorithms or models, ISO 42001 focuses on governance. It helps organisations manage AI safely, ethically and transparently by embedding clear oversight, accountability and continual improvement into every stage of AI development and deployment.

The standard addresses areas include:

  • AI governance and accountability
  • Risk identification and management
  • Transparency and explainability
  • Security and privacy
  • Ethical use of AI
  • Regulatory readiness and continual improvement

Why it matters for WorkBuzz’s Customers

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to help organisations better understand employee feedback, engage key stakeholders to act on insights and enable leaders to make faster, more informed decisions.

However, organisations also need confidence that their platform partners’ AI is being developed responsibly and that appropriate safeguards are in place.

ISO 42001 provides that assurance.

For WorkBuzz customers, certification means they can be confident that AI capabilities within the platform are developed and managed within an independently audited framework that prioritises security, governance, transparency and responsible innovation.

It also demonstrates that WorkBuzz has established clear processes for identifying and managing AI-related risks while continually reviewing and improving how AI is governed across the organisation.

A significant achievement

Although AI has become one of the fastest-growing areas of technology investment, relatively few organisations worldwide have achieved ISO/IEC 42001 certification to date.

WorkBuzz joins a leading group of organisations that include Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, Workday, KPMG, Thomson Reuters and Zendesk.

For an independent HR technology company, achieving the certification represents a significant investment in responsible AI at an early stage of the technology’s evolution, supporting their innovative deployment of AI to transform employee listening effectiveness.

Rather than treating governance as an afterthought, the WorkBuzz team has embedded responsible AI principles into the way it develops products, helping customers overcome challenges they have traditionally faced in evolving a successful employee listening programme.

Steven Frost, Founder and CEO of WorkBuzz, said:

“Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to help organisations better understand and improve employee experience, but that opportunity comes with responsibility. From the beginning, we’ve believed that trust must be built into every stage of how AI is designed, developed and deployed.

Achieving ISO 42001 demonstrates our commitment to responsible innovation. It gives our customers confidence that our AI capabilities are governed by internationally recognised best practice and that we are managing AI with the same rigour we apply to security, privacy and data protection.

We’re particularly proud to have achieved this as an independent HR technology company. While many organisations our size are still developing their AI governance strategies, we’ve invested early because we believe trust is a competitive advantage. Our customers should never have to choose between innovation and responsible AI.”

Ian Barrow, Client Services Director, added:

“Responsible AI doesn’t happen by accident. It requires strong engineering discipline, clear governance and continuous oversight across the entire software development lifecycle.

Achieving ISO 42001 reflects the standards we’ve embedded into our engineering processes from the outset. It provides independent validation that our AI capabilities are developed within a robust management framework that prioritises security, transparency and accountability.

Combined with our ISO 27001 certification, it demonstrates our commitment to building technology that organisations can trust with both their data and their people.”

Looking ahead

Responsible AI is not a destination but an ongoing commitment.

ISO 42001 provides the framework for continual improvement, ensuring that as WorkBuzz continues to innovate with artificial intelligence, customers can remain confident that every new capability is developed with appropriate governance, security and oversight.
